The Sazerac Lying Club is more than just a funny book: it is
a historical and unvarnished look at life in the silver mine town
of Austin, Nevada, in the year 1878. Some of the tall tales found
in this book have found their way into western movies and television
shows, as well as a few books. The author, writing in his time and his
environment, pulled no "Politically Correct" punches, using the word
"Nigger" for black people, "Son of the Forest" and "Squaw" (among
other words) for American Indians, "Chinaman" for Chinese Men, and
various and sundry other words and phrases that some people in the
modern world might object to. To the people who might object, I
say "Tough shit:" Americana is as it is, and no one should feel
obligated to varnish American history to appease misplaced ire
and petty offense.
It took a great deal of work to render this historical book into HTML, retaining the images, the spelling, and the punctuation as closely to the original as possible. The author, putting words into the President of the Sazerac Lying Club, stated the object of publishing the book was so that future generations could be educated and enlightened by the lies told in the Sazerac Saloon. Towards that end, I have made this text available in several formats: |
| HTML web page | This is the entire book and images, all in "one go." I made the HTML page as generic as possible so that all browsers will be able to display the page. There are several images, but most as very small. |
| PKZipped HTML web page and images. | This link will allow you to download the HTML page and the images, so that you may read the book at your leasure from your own computer's hard disk. This is probably the preferred method for most people. |
| ASCII Text version. | For only the text, without images, this is the link to use. |
